    We asked our candidates to flex their creative muscles with a professional design brief.

    The winner of the competition would receive the title of “Gloss Young Talent of the Year“, and a £100 Amazon gift voucher.

    Candidates were asked to create a brand identity for Leeds, to help it attract the best graphic design talent. Although Leeds is a hotspot for creative professionals, it’s facing stiff competition from Manchester and London at the moment. This project was a fun way to imagine how young professionals might be attracted to Leeds instead.

    We’re proud to reveal Mark Hoolahan has taken the prize!

    He impressed us with his quirky and characterful branding, which he managed to combine with a keen understanding of the design brief.

    “Mark won thanks to his clever and thoughtful design, which combined Yorkshire icons with Leeds’ unique identity”, explained Gloss Recruitment’s Ian Rigby.

    “The campaign had an audience of 14–20 year olds, and its lighthearted tone certainly hit the mark. We liked its campaign tagline—”Be a creative, not a sheep”—which neatly conveys the creative opportunities of jobs in this sector. Mark also gained an edge by presenting the work in context; he provided both a logo and leaflet mockup, as well as an explanation of his thought process.”

    In his competition entry, Mark explained the ideas behind his entry:

    “Be a creative not a sheep – in keeping with the popular notion of Yorkshire folk being no-nonsense with a good sense of humour. Sheep not only represent the region’s sprawling countryside but also feature in Leeds City Council’s logo.”

    We’re very excited to announce our talent award winner. We’d like to congratulate Mark Hoolahan once more for his well thought-out campaign; its fun design embraces the spirit of Leeds, and we’re sure he has a promising design career ahead of him.
